I started my day walking about mile up Las Vegas Blvd, marveling at the amazing buildings! Its hot!
Today is our Barrett Jackson day! But
first, we had to find breakfast. We started at he Denny's next door,
and found a line out to the street. So we moved over to McDonald's
(not enthusiastically) and found lots of people but a pretty
efficient operation. So we settled for Egg McMuffins.
We called Uber for a ride over to the
convention center. ($13) (Uber is awesome! Its so much easier than
having you own car or trying to figure out public transportation).
We got to the auction about 10:30. They
were in the process of auctioning memorabilia – gas pumps, signs,
etc. That stuff can go for a lot!!
There are about 800 cars here of all
stripes, along with a variety of vendors, car manufacturers, garage
equipment, etc. We're in the city's brand spanking new convention
center – its spectacular! There's also a really spacious, nice food
court.
We walked around and looked at ALL the
cars, ooing and awing and lots of them! There are lots of Mustangs
and Corvettes. We were more attracted to mid 50's & 60s GM
cars. The perfect restorations are real works of art! There are great deals to be had for Mercedes, Rolls Royce,
Bentley and Masserati Quattro Porte. We sat and watched the auction
for a while. Nothing sold for more than $30k.Understand that this is a "no reserve" auction meaning that every car here will be sold at some price.
There is a strategic decision to make
when visiting this auction. It typically lasts three days. If you come
on the first (which we did) you'll be able to inspect all the cars
since none of them will have been sold and left yet. The first day's
cars seem to be the lower priced ones that don't generate a lot of
excitement.
By the third day, you'll see the more
exotic cars which will go for the really big bucks. The bottom line
is, if you are interested in bidding on anything, you need to be
there all three days!
We Ubered back to our hotel by 5:00. We
had tickets for a show at 7:00 next door and since we had experienced
so much trouble in getting a decent meal we decided to get a snack at
this little place inside the Mirage. We really wanted to have the
experience at Guy Fieri's so we did that after the show. Nothing to
write home about. We ate on the patio but there was so much noise
from the outdoor band next door that we had virtually no
conversation. (In fact, its noisy everywhere! LV is real assault on the senses!)
The show we went to was petty lame, six
scantily clad dancing girls doing repetitive things to loud country
music. It was called “X Country”. They were quite athletic but
not very well endowed!
The weather is still very hot (110) but
is also very dry so its not really that uncomfortable.
We have tickets for Matt Franco
tomorrow night but no particular plans for the day.
